Through the project “Immersive Exhibition of Central Asian Petroglyphs,” we seek to present the ancient rock art of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan in a new way, as a shared cultural heritage of the region. For us, petroglyphs are not only archaeological monuments, but also carriers of living memory, meaning, and worldview preserved by local communities across generations.
With this project, we are trying to bring together scientific research and traditional knowledge in one shared space, showing petroglyphs both as historical evidence and as part of a living cultural and spiritual tradition. Through multimedia, sound, visual materials, oral storytelling, and artistic interpretation, we hope to make this heritage more accessible and meaningful for contemporary audiences, especially for younger generations.
At the same time, we aim to draw attention to the vulnerability of petroglyphs, which today face natural erosion, vandalism, industrial pressure, and the gradual loss of the traditional knowledge connected to them. Our goal is not only to communicate the value of this heritage, but also to contribute to its preservation, reinterpretation, and transmission through collaboration between researchers, local communities, artists, and cultural practitioners.
The project is supported by Aliph Foundation.
