The project for creating a National Database of Traditional Crafts of Kyrgyzstan was initiated by the Aigine Cultural Research Center in partnership with ICHCAP (UNESCO, Republic of Korea) and the Ministry of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic. It started in October 2024 and was completed in July 2025.
The main goal was to establish a structured, multilingual, and accessible digital database that brings together artisans and their crafts from all regions of the country. This resource not only consolidates knowledge and visual materials but also serves as a key tool for safeguarding and promoting Kyrgyzstan’s intangible cultural heritage.
From January to June 2025, field research was carried out in all seven provinces of Kyrgyzstan. A total of 14 researchers worked in remote areas, interviewing artisans, documenting production processes, and creating extensive photo and video archives.
The methodology included face-to-face interviews, observation, photo and video documentation, and the use of standardized Excel templates. The primary inclusion criteria were the artisan’s active practice of the craft and their consent to participate.
