Langar: Petroglyphs of the Pamirs in Need of Protection

As part of the project “Preserving Traditional Art through the Creation of a Unified Interactive Platform for the Petroglyphs of Central Asia”, and with the support of Aigine CRC, our partner Kurbon Alamshoev carried out an expedition to the Langar petroglyphs in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan.

Langar is one of the most remarkable sites of the Pamirs, rich in distinctive petroglyphs created centuries and even millennia ago. Despite its historical and cultural value, this complex remains without proper protection or official recognition.

The goal of the project is not only to document these priceless monuments, but also to draw attention to the urgent need for their preservation, involving local communities, researchers, and policymakers.

The work in Langar has become an important step towards creating a future database of Central Asian petroglyphs, combining both archaeological and ethnographic information, and ensuring that this heritage is preserved and accessible for future generations.
