Formation of proverbs and text in Tajik language was conducted by the members of Batken research group Yusupov Gulzoda and Ergashev Sukhrob. Translation of the original Kyrgyz version in Uzbek language was conducted by the member of Batken research group Zholdoshaliev Nurbolot.

Development of a textbook in Kyrgyz, Russian, Uzbek and Tajik languages

The textbook on traditional knowledge related to water was created through a participatory process. The researchers in regional teams were asked to identify the emerging themes while collecting data. At the second and third meetings, the participants identified the common emerging themes and developed the first draft of the textbook. The project expert Aibek Samakov helped to edit and organize the textbook. The edited version was circulated among the participants and the latter used a month to amend, edit and correct the text.  The final set of chapters in the textbook is:

  • Water for me is… (tells about local people’s perceptions of and attitude towards water)
  • Rituals related to water (tells about various rituals related to water)
  • The healing properties of water (tells about medicinal uses of water)
  • Methods of water extraction and its rational use (tells about use of water in everyday life)
  • Disputes over water
  • Legends (gives account of legends related to different water bodies)
  • Proverbs and sayings about water

The textbook also included contributions of few experts, namely Karamoldoev Zhumakadyr and Sadyr uulu Zhamagazy.

The textbook was initially drafted in Kyrgyz and Russian because the most of the interviews were in these two languages. Then, the textbook was translated into Uzbek and Tajik languages.
