Today, 4 May 2022, the working group on a geographically more balanced representation of accredited NGOs under the 2003 UNESCO Convention met with accredited NGOs in the African Region.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the issue of the underrepresentation of ICH NGOs in the Forum and consider possible ways to attract more NGOs for accreditation.
During the meeting, the participants discussed various difficulties that organizations face on the way to accreditation – a complex application form, language barriers, lack of confidence in their potential, as well as low awareness of organizations about the 2003 Convention on the Preservation of ICH, etc.
As a result, it was decided to hold another meeting with NGOs in Africa to discuss the draft materials on raising awareness and building the capacity of organizations to address the challenges outlined above. The chair and secretary of the working group will prepare a draft version, which will be presented for discussion during the second meeting in early June 2022.
