Aitpaeva G."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">This essay discusses the concept of kyrgyzchylyk (rather inadequately<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">rendered in English as \u2018Kyrgyzness\u2019) as a way of transcending<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">different boundaries: the Soviet past, Koran-based<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">Islam, rational thinking. Several aspects of the concept and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">its meaning in everyday life are discussed; in particular the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">idea of kyrgyzchylyk as spirituality is examined. Moreover,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">the concept can be seen as transcending the boundaries between<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">traditional beliefs and Islam. Traditional practitioners<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2013 healers, clairvoyants, epic storytellers, sacred sites custodians<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">and others \u2013 are seen as becoming powerful people<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">through their practices, and the role of kyrgyzchylyk in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 12pt;\">context of the traditional worldview is assessed.
