Abstract: The events of July 4, 1916 in Khujand, which became the beginning of the uprising in the entire region, were repeatedly considered by experts. However, the issue of women\u2019s participation in these events is little studied. The uprising of 1916 was the first major political event where Tajik women actively participated. Hodimi Jamolak, who led the Khujand residents against the colonial administration became an idealized of a female fighter. The actions of Hodimi Jamolak are reflected in folklore and fiction and are associated with a real person – a resident of Khujand Bibisolekha Kobilhodzhayeva. At the same time, in the archival documents concerning the events of 1916 in Khujand, the active participation of women is noted, but there are no indications about Hodimi Jamolak or Bibisolekha Kobilhojaeva. The lack of documentary evidence casts doubt on the existence of such a historical person.<\/span><\/p>\n

The image of Hodimi Jamolak, as an active participant in the events of 1916 in Khujand, appeared and entered to the circle of famous personalities much later than the time when the events took place. To confirm gender equality, the Bolsheviks needed an image of \u201cawakened women of the East\u201d. In the Soviet period, the heroization of the actions of the Hodimi Jamolak led to the fact that this woman became the embodiment of the image of a Tajik woman who stood in the front lines of the fighters against the colonial system of Russia. In some scientific papers, Hodimi Jamolak is also recognized as an activist in the events of 1916 in Khujand. Most likely, Bibisolekha Kobilhodzhaeva (Hodimi Jamolak) is a real historical person, although not completely identical to any particular participant in the uprising. The image was glorified in accordance with the developing Soviet ideology aimed at creating an image of a female fighter for her rights, equality and political rights of women.<\/span><\/p>\n
